About Writing in the Disciplines at Pitt

The University of Pittsburgh was one of the first in the nation to recognize and promote the value of writing in the undergraduate curriculum. Over the last three decades, it has cultivated a conception of writing as a powerful mode of thought, a way for students to participate actively in the intellectual work of higher education.

Since the 1980s, the School of Arts and Sciences at Pitt has offered writing-intensive courses in every academic major.

Writing in the Disciplines programs support faculty and graduate students who teach designated writing-intensive courses. Just as importantly, these programs aim to encourage and assist all those who regularly use writing to enrich the undergraduate learning experience.
